It's Contagious!

“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.” Plato

November 13th is World Kindness Day, part of an ever-growing movement of people who share a vision of a happier, fairer world. Like pebbles dropped in a pond, acts of kindness & compassion create a ripple effect that can benefit the wider circle.

In a world where capitalism, greed & self-interest dominate, personal attributes such as tolerance, openness, trust & generosity have been consistently undermined. Society is built upon the many-faceted, interconnecting relationships we have with each other, & kindness is one of the underpinning foundations for a healthy world.

Communities that foster competitive mistrust, corruption & survival of the fittest at the expense of the most vulnerable, leave us out of touch with our own feelings & in danger of becoming estranged & alienated. Dedicating one day a year to reminding us of the need for kindness is a first step in redressing the balance.

And the gift of kindness is a gift to ourselves too, as it benefits the giver as well as the receiver.  When we reach out to another living being, either physically or emotionally, our brain produces oxytocin, the neuropeptide that helps create the intense bond that a mother feels for her newborn child. In short, kindness makes people feel better about themselves, bringing a more peaceful & harmonious state of mind.

It doesn’t have to be a grand gesture. A simple smile, hug or friendly exchange can make all the difference to somebody’s day.

Start the ripple effect today, & see how far it spreads.
